Kopparossa Estate has received one of its biggest accolades yet, with two of its acclaimed Shiraz in contention to win the coveted Winestate Magazine Wine of the Year 2016 award.
The Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Vintage Reserve Shiraz led the way during the recent Winestate Magazine Annual Limestone Coast judging for 2016, being awarded five stars and judged top of its class, while its sister the Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Shiraz was awarded an impressive four-and-a-half stars and equal second in its Class.
The results saw both wines judged ahead of more than 10,000 others tasted and qualifies them for the honour of being a finalist for the prized Wine of the Year awards.
Experienced winemaker Gavin Hogg, who has already won a Jimmy Watson Trophy for the inaugural Jamiesons Run in 1989, said the Winestate tasting results were well-deserved for both wines, which have been slowly peaking towards perfection since 2012.
“Patience is a virtue in appreciating the complexities of the Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Reds,” said Hogg.
“We realised in the early stages of fermentation that the extraordinary potential on the vine was being realised in the fermenters. Post barrel maturation for 36 months and bottling it would take at least 12 months to settle and start demonstrating their class.
“The Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Vintage Reserve Shiraz and its stablemate, the Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Shiraz, have been the leaders of the pack so far in terms of Wine Show success.
“However, both the Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Cabernets are also beginning to assert their credentials in terms of quality and class.
“The Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Vintage Reserve Shiraz is a great example of the harnessing and application of technology philosophy that we pursue in the name of perfection and excellence for all of our wines.”
The two Kopparossa Estate 2012 Shiraz wines weren’t the only wines in the Kopparossa Estate/Hoggies Estate Wines portfolio to receive accolades from the recent Winestate tasting.
The Hoggies Estate 2015 Coonawarra Sauvignon Blancwas rated three-and-a-half stars and equal top in its category, while the Kopparossa 2012 Coonawarra Vintage Reserve Cabernet also received three-and-a-half stars.
The older 2008 Kopparossa Estate Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon was judged three stars.
Hogg said it was encouraging to witness various Shiraz wines from Coonawarra receiving increasing acclaim in addition to its widely respected cousin, the ‘Classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.’
“Countless people have extolled the virtues and characters of the ‘Classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon’,” he said.
“However, the Shiraz wines made from Coonawarra grown fruit have increasingly grabbed the headlines as viticulturists and winemakers have harnessed new technology such as clonal selection, soils analysis, trellis design, irrigation technology, grape maturity monitoring, yeast and fermentation technology as well as oak maturation timing and techniques.”
Hogg said it was also particularly pleasing to see the Hoggies Estate portfolio receiving acclaim for its white wine portfolio.
“Our white wines portfolio under the Hoggies Wines banner has been performing strongly in the Wineshow, peer and public judging arenas for some years now,” he said.
“This calendar year the following wines have achieved "Best Value under $20" status in Winestate Magazine - Hoggies NV Coonawarra Sparkling Chardonnay/Pinot Noir, Hoggies 2015 Coonawarra Sauvignon Blanc, Hoggies 2014 Coonawarra Riesling and Hoggies 2014 Coonawarra Chardonnay.
“As can be seen from the latest Winestate Magazine Limestone Coast Tasting, the Hoggies 2015 Coonawarra Sauvignon Blanc has excelled in gaining equal top status in its class.
“We are proud to promote the fact that we fully and enthusiastically embrace new and old technologies and are committed to a disciplined program of continual improvement for the benefit of our customers.
“The continued wine show success of our Kopparossa, Olivia and Hoggies Brands is testament to our determination to produce wines of quality, consistency, individual character and value for money."For more information and to purchase any of our wines, simply log on to www.hoggieswine.com
